A U.S. Geological Survey ESIC (Earth Sciences Information Center) library

The library is located at the main office of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey at 3240 Schoolhouse Road in Middletown. Click here for directions.

The library is open to the public  Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Please use the appointment calendar to schedule your visit.

The Pennsylvania Geological Survey library houses a large collection of topographic maps, historical and recent aerial photographs, and geologic texts, maps, and journals. Most books and journals may be checked out of the library for 28 days. To borrow materials, you must visit the library in person and provide identification with a permanent address (e.g., a driver’s license). If you are not able to visit the library in person, you can contact your local library to arrange for an interlibrary loan.

Included in the library collection are all the publications of the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Pennsylvania Geological Surveys. Many of the reports from the Fourth Survey are also available from local repository libraries, and the majority of reports are available online. See our publications page for additional information.

The GeoRef database is available for use in the library. GeoRef is a product of the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) and contains over 3 million references to geoscience journal articles, books, maps, conference papers, reports, and theses.

Questions on library services and operations may be directed to, or call the Survey library at 717-702-2020.
